Upcycled Halloween Decor: Create a Fabric Garland with Scraps

Halloween is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to get creative with sustainable decor! Instead of purchasing plastic decorations that end up in landfill, why not repurpose fabric scraps into a DIY garland? This easy, budget-friendly project reduces waste and adds a personalised, eco-friendly touch to your Halloween festivities; plus, it is super easy- meaning you can get the kids involved in its creation.

Here’s how to effortlessly create your fabric garland using items you likely already have at home!

Materials Needed:

  • Scrap fabric (old clothes, sheets, or fabric remnants)
  • Scissors
  • String or wool
  • Ruler (optional, for even cutting)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Gather Your Scraps:
Go through your old clothes, bedsheets, or leftover fabric scraps and select patterns and colours that suit your Halloween theme. Whether black, oranges, or any other colour, the choice is yours to make it uniquely yours.
  2. Cut or tear Fabric Strips:
Cut or tear the fabric into strips about 1 to 2 inches wide and 12 to 18 inches long using scissors. Don’t worry if the strips aren’t perfect—part of the charm of this garland is its rustic, handmade look!

Prepare Your Base String:
Cut a length of string or wool long enough to fit where you want to hang the garland. Leave extra length on both ends for tying it up.
Tie the Strips to the String:
Tying each fabric strip around the string in a simple knot. Push the strips together to sit snugly beside each other, creating a garland. Alternate between different colours and patterns to make it visually attractive.

    Adjust and Hang:

Once you’ve tied enough strips to cover the string, fluff the fabric to give it some volume. Hang your garland across a mantel, around a doorframe, or in any space that needs festive flair! We intend on using ours as part of our eco-friendly halloween decorations this year.

Why It’s Eco-Friendly: Reusing fabric scraps reduces the need for new materials and keeps textiles out of landfill. Plus, fabric garlands are reusable year after year, making them an excellent investment for your Halloween decor collection.

Happy crafting, and let’s make this Halloween as spooky as it is sustainable! 🎃💚
